Asking for protection
It seems we have been in different ages these days.
Here are crosses that people erected as a request for protection and placed in important places: in crossroads, on the fields, near the fountains. They are all from the museum, except for the last one: it was really in the field. And, as a contrast, see the fresh manure spread around, to prepare the field for the new crops? Before expecting for divine help, one has to help himself! :)
As a proverb says: "God will help but he will not fill up your bag".

they are so different that it is almost impossible to believe they all have the same use.
Most probably those people still have a particular way to ask for protection.
Nice journey!
The shape depends on their geographical area, their place and the secondary purpose, such as remembering dear ones. The last-but-one is also in the honour of two rulers.
Thank you. I have regained my appetite for photos, but I will have no time for working with them in the near future.
By the way, we have a proverb in Spanish to gather your last idea in the post: " A Dios rogando y con el mazo dando" something like " Praying to God and hitting with the mallet". Meaning that payers are only useful if you work.
Quite true, I like that. And it resembles ours, in a way.
